Ok. Who's going to ask about badges first? C'mon, don't be shy! :)

Oh... wait

Get with the program. Badges were literally discussed on the day the project opened! :)

The response was basically, "Anyone know how to draw?"

I really like the guy who is running this project. He's sociable, responsive, and reacts well to suggestions and criticism.

(I too am looking for more gaudy BOINC bling.)

I have nothing morally against badges, I'm just trying to keep enough WUs to keep you all happy...badges are a wee bit down on the priority list at the moment.

OK. That's one vote for non-fish badges. :)

I definitely like having work. Badges can come later.
Keep up the great work and really appreciate the quick responses so far. This in itself makes me want to contribute.

huh... what are these?

Celebrating "Opening up the black box".

They're not live yet, but you can see them here: https://www.mlcathome.org/badges/ . They're a little asymetric, but its the best I can do for the time being.

I'm thinking these ranking
Top 5/10/25% RAC: gold, silver, bronze
1K credits, 1M credits, 1B credits: red/green/blue
And one special "Early Adapoter" badge (EA) for anyone who receives credit by July 30th.

It's going to take me a bit to set up, but they're better than nothing.

Imho I'd substitute the 1K badge with a 100K badge. 1000 credits can be done in just a few hours on a decent machine, it's not an "achievement".

IMHO, it is better to leave standard images for the top 1-5-25% and exclude them from export
they are useless for signatures and statistics sites

achievement badges are too complex, when scaled to 32 * 32 they will lose their expressiveness
you can leave 1M and MLC on a simple color field - a circle, hexagon or shield

the first badge 1k is too small (4 WU), but 100k is too much for the entry level (this is now Top100), I'm for 10k and more gradations

PS if you plan to add other applications / subprojects later, then you can enable "by application statistics" and add badges for achievements separately in each subproject, then instead of the MLC you need MLDS

1K is small on purpose. Most people who don't regularly use BOINC don't even know about badges until they get their first one.
It's meaningless for regulars, and it isn't meaningless to a new person joining. For a lot of people, ti's the only badge they'll be able to get.

I could be convinced to bump it to 10K, but that's about as high as I'm willing to go.

I to am worried about how these look in 48x48 though.

well, create everything in the line 1k 10k 100k 1M 10M 100M 1G 10G 100G
1st - start, closed black box ;-)
the last one - for growth, top RAC users will get it quickly

I definitely appreciate the effort and trying to be somewhat unique with your badges. I would also like to encourage you to bump the starting badge to 10K. As for the number of badges, I think you could modify the opacity of the color coming out of the box and get the color scheme used in many projects (normally referred to color-wise as emerald, ruby, sapphire and then add turquoise, amethyst, jade, etc. for more badge intervals)

I like a brainy style badge but any decent image looks awful at 30 pixels. Use a larger badge size like GPUGrid & LHC do.

Sorry to say, badges have taken a bit of the backseat for a few weeks while I focus on analyzing the early results and adding ARM support.

Also, I'm looking for badges that look better at such a low res. I'll get to them sometime soon though, because it helps keep the project fun!
