A weekly summary of news and notes for [email protected]

Summary
Happy 2021!

This past week marked the 6 month anniversary of this project, so we wanted to look back at how far we've come, assess what's gone well, find areas we need to improve, and talk about the future.

Overall, the community response has been amazing and we feel like we've built a really solid foundation for understanding and evaluating neural networks. We'll list some of our thoughts below, and we encourage you, the community to comment below with your thoughts as well.

The Good

Areas to Improve:

What the future holds

There are plenty more things we could mention, like tweaks to validations (some good, some .. err..less so), having a podcast made about the project, the generosity we've received from other project admins helping us getting our feet under us. And, of course, badges. We, as admins, have learned a lot about how to run a project, and despite some stumbles we hope you find the science compelling, the project interesting, and the community welcoming.

At 6 months in, we're on the cusp of real results, which should feed lots more interesting science. Thanks to all our volunteers for helping push the science of machine learning forward, and we hope to give you reason to continue to support us for many years to come.

If you have feedback, please leave it in the comments below.

A weekly summary of news and notes for [email protected]

Summary
Happy holidays and happy new year from MLC!

So we decided to put out an update this week anyway,, First, we've completed milestone 2 of Dataset 3, that means 1000 trained networks for each of the 100 randomly generated automata! This is a huge milestone and makes analysis much more interesting! Another important user-visible change is the website and project now sit behind a CDN. This vastly reduces the bandwidth requirements on the server, and speeds up client downloads tremendously, and there appears to be few negative effects on the project as a whole. If you see issues, please post them in the forum so they can be addressed.

Finally, we've noticed a large influx of new volunteers over the past week. Welcome! And thank you for supporting the scientific work we're trying to do.

More news below:
* We are working on revamping much of the behind-the-scenes machinery for validation and assimilation to update our handling of NaN.
* Our updated WUs to try and cross the 1000-network threshold for all DS2 WUs seems to be having a positive effect, with nearly 100 new networks complete within the past week. We will continue this until we cross that threshold.
* Over the break, our main effort is to continue to work on analysis, paper writing, a new ROCM client release, and continue to prepare for DS4.

Summary
Happy holidays from MLC!

TWIM Notes will go on hiatus for the holidays, unless there's something urgent to update, this will be the last update for 2020.

A few notes this week:

* We're now over 1,500 independent volunteers!
* We really would like to get DS2 over with 1000-entry threshold for each network type for the analysis, which means we've re-balanced some WUs to prioritize ParityModifed WUs. To that end, we've stuffed the GPU task queue with double-length ParityModified WUs (credit is double accordingly). That means runtimes will increase for GPUs, although there are still plenty of older WUs still being worked on, so you may get older or newer work for a while yet.
* Accordingly, we've stuffed the CPU work queue with Dataset 3 WUs to continue to make progress there.
* The above change lead to two known issues that were found and resolved this week. First, the first several longer WUs were failing validation until the validation process we updated, and the credit calculation was off for a few days (in the users favor). Both issue have now been corrected, thanks to those who reported these issues in the forum.
* Over the break, our main effort is to continue to work on analysis, paper writing, and re-architecting to simplify the backend validation and assimilation logic behind the scenes to help keep issues like the two that hit this week from happening in the future.

Summary
Very little to update this week, so we'll keep this short, and won't notify in BOINC manager. Lots of good progress this week towards DS1/2/3 milestones, and some tweaking to the main site https://www.mlcathome.org/ to include our twitter feed and some more info on our progress.

Also, if you are confused about nomenclature like "DS1-500" or "DS3-1000" in the previous updates, just know its different ways of sampling from the full dataset to make smaller subsets, useful as we're writing our results. You can read more here: https://www.mlcathome.org/mlds.html.

Other than that, just analysis and paper writing.

Summary
Lots of analysis of the results, and paper writing, and fighting with LaTeX this week. The good news is, as posted on Twitter, Dataset 3 shows similar networks clustering in weight-space the same as dataset 1 and 2 do. This is a nice result and currently being written up as part of a "dataset paper" we're preparing for when we release the datasets to the public. We're currently training our own neural network classifier to classify which DS3 networks were trained with which DS3 data based solely on their weights, and we have high hopes for good results there given the clustering in the linked graph.

It was a a relatively quiet week on the forums, but big leaps in WU progress! We're less than 900 networks away from completing the EightBitModified networks for DS2, less than 9000 networks away from completing DS3 milestone 2, and less than 80 ParityModified networks away from completing DS2-500. Thanks again to
all our volunteers.

Summary
BoincNetwork did a podcast introducing [email protected]! You can listen to the episode, including some comments from your MLC Admins, at https://www.boinc.network/episode/mlchome. Thanks to all those at BoincNetwork for taking an interest in us.

Last week we pivoted towards analysis and writing. However, we did take one last crack at Linux/CUDA support, and surprisingly that seems to have done the trick. We've released Linux/CUDA support to the main mlds-gpu queue. There are some trade-offs with the new client though, especially with regards to disk space required.

We're also released Linux/ROCm AMD GPU support to mldstest, but it is currently only enabled for VEGA 56/64 GPUs, and requires a Linux 5.0.0 kernel or greater. Please see the link in the News section below for more details.

We also spent some time overhauling the MLDS Dataset page on the main website. It's still not done, but a little less outdated than it was, and is preparing for more releasing the first rounds of datasets. With that and some more analysis, we're working towards our first Dataset paper. More news below:

Notes for Nov 17 2020
A weekly summary of news and notes for [email protected]

Summary
GPU week(s), part 4: The saga continues.

This coming week we're starting to pivot back to writing and analysis of existing data. There's a lot to discuss related to GPUs still, but we also need to take time to write a bit; and frankly, the issues with the Linux/CUDA client have us stumped for the moment, so taking a week or two to focus on some of the science that's been piling up should help clear our heads and come back to it with a fresh perspective.

This past week we enabled the release track ("mlds-gpu" application) of the GPU client for Windows and Linux, and the good news is that at least the Windows client is working fairly well*, and its chewing through WUs wonderfully, complimenting the CPU crunching that continues to unabated. Having a separate app allows us to capture the wildly different RAM requirements for CUDA WUs without penalizing CPU crunchers. The GPU line allows us to send out longer dataset 1+2 WUs, which has led to a nice boost to the number of complete Parity* WUs, meaning we finally have over 1000 examples of each network type for Dataset1, and on our way to that in Dataset 2. It would be nice to wrap up those two sooner rather than later. We'll continue to release WUs in parallel to both the CPU and GPU queues to keep both users fed.

Not all is well in GPU land though. We released the Linux/CUDA client, but after several days, not a single WU completed without error, so we've pulled that back from production and will try again. This is incredibly frustrating, as it works on our test machine, but on volunteer machines it fails with CUDA errors indicating userspace<->driver incompatibilities. Clearly we're not bundling it up correctly. In addition, there's been some strange results to CPU utilization and the Windows CUDA client. Users have reported better performance and utilization if they assign two CPUs to the WU instead of one, even though one core remains idle the entire time. There's some speculation in the linked thread, but we should track that down soon as well.

All that's to say we're really excited that GPU support is at least partially live and giving us a nice performance boost, but it's also been more of a drain on resources than anticipated, and we need to turn focus back a bit before tackling Linux/CUDA again. If any experienced Linux/CUDA devs would like to offer help deploying our pytorch/cuda app combination, we'd love for you to contact us and help us troubleshoot.

More specific news below, some of it is even non-GPU related!

Summary
GPU week(s), part 3. We took some time off this past week to focus on things other than academics, but still managed to get an updated Linux/CUDA client out that now works on at least some systems. Attempting to make a single application that runs on multiple OS, drivers, and CUDA versions is proving to be difficult. This is also a strange case where the Linux app is proving more difficult than Windows... 2020 is a really weird timeline.

GPU week(s), part 2. The downsides of giving weekly updates is sometimes you don't have a lot to report. Sadly most of this week was lost attempting to debug a strange crash related solely to the client when compiled for Linux/CUDA. It turns out it has nothing to do with our code, its a strange interaction between the threading library used in the pre-compiled pytorch libraries, and the BOINC library. It took several days for us to realize it wasn't our code causing the issue, now it'll take a few more to find a solution, which will likely require a custom-compiled pytorch, which will take a few more days to debug.

GPU speedups are worth it, but please bear with us as we work through these issues in the testing queue, and keep churning away on the main research queue!

Summary
This week we crossed the 1000 users-with-credit threshold! Thanks again for all our volunteers!

GPU week, part 1. This week was consumed with developing and releasing to testing CUDA clients. The good news, when they work, they do provide a nice performance boost. The bad news, there are a lot of kinks to work out yet. Currently, we've released a windows/CUDA and linux/CUDA binary. The windows binary works if the user has the right environment (cuda 10.2 is known to work). The linux/CUDA binary was just released 48 hours ago and currently is broken in new and surprising ways not seen in our internal testing. Both apps will need some server-side changes to only allow hosts that can meet these minimum requirements. Luckily, that's why we have the "mldstest" application to find these issues before we release to the main channel!

Also, the GPU apps are much larger than our current CPU app, and have wildly different resource requirements. So much so, that we will likely be releasing them as a separate app to run alongside the CPU apps with their own WUs. That way we can isolate GPU WUs from CPU WUs and keep everyone happy and crunching.

If you're interested in testing, please make sure you have "Run test applications?" and "Use NVIDIA GPU?" checked in your project preferences, and follow/post your experience in the forum.

Scheduled Server Maintenance
[email protected] will be going down at midnight (Easter US timezone) tonight, Oct 8th (a little over 4 hours from now), to migrate to a new, more powerful server.

The outage is scheduled for all day Oct 9th, during which time the web site and boinc work schedulers will be offline. We expect to be back up and running (on a much more powerful server!) by the morning of Oct 10th (hopefully sooner!). We'll post updates to twitter with progress in case something doesn't go according to plan: https://twitter.com/MLCHome2 .

Thanks again for your support, and we'll be back shortly!

Notes for Oct 5 2020
A weekly summary of news and notes for [email protected]

Summary
This week [email protected] turns 100 days old! Since the beginning, we've released 3 datasets worth of WUs, released many application updates, rolled out support for 3 new architectures on Linux, and rolled out Windows support. But we're just getting started.

It's been a busy week: Dataset 3 is approaching its first milestone of 100 networks for 100 samples (100x100), and its only been ~15 days. Badges went live on the site. We benchmarked Dataset 3 WUs on a GPU (40% speedup on AMD ROCm). We even some potential movement on OSX support. Read on to find out more.

But first, an apology: we had a server glitch today where the work scheduler was unavailable for several hours. We've corrected the problem and taken steps to make sure it doesn't happen again.

Next, [email protected] was happy to roll out badges this week. There are now badges for top RAC percentage, and milestone badges for hitting credit milestones per app. Currently, only new credit (as of Oct 1) is counted towards milestones, but by the end of this week we should be able to get all previous credit counted towards them as well. So if you don't have a badge yet, please be patient, its coming. We're also offering a special Early Adopter badge to anyone who has credit by our 100th day, October 8th. Consider it a small token of thanks for supporting our new project.

Badges!
[email protected] is happy to announce that badges are now available!

We're scientists, not artists; but why not have some fun:

There are three types of badges volunteers can earn:

1) RAC Badges: badges for having a (user/team) with a high RAC for the project. These are gold/silver/bronze badges for top 1%, 5%, and 25% RAC.

2) Milestone Badges: Starting today (October 1st 2020), we've enabled sub-project credit reporting. While we only have one sub-project at the moment (MLDS), we plan to have more in the future. With this, we're instituting "Milestone badges" you can earn for contributing a certain number of credits per sub-project. These badges are available at milestones, the first being 10K credits. While all users retain their overall credit (I repeat no credit is lost), these badges will only be awarded for work done after today, when the server started keeping track of per-app credit. Thresholds for milestone badges are (currently) 10K (onyx), 500K (amethyst), 1M (sapphire), 500M (ruby), and 1B (emerald) credits.

3) Special Badges: These are special, one-off badges for special events. The first one is a reward for those who have supported our little project so far. We're going to grant an "Early Adopter" badge for anyone who has any type of credit on this project during its first 100 days. This project went live the night of June 30th, 2020, so that leaves just 1 week (October 8th!) to earn some credit and qualify for the badge.

We hope that these badges help keep things fun, and motivate all of you to keep supporting our work. We're so close to not only writing our first papers based on these results, but also releasing these datasets so others (maybe even you) can build our collective effort. There is no way we could do this without you.

Thank you!

A weekly summary of news and notes for [email protected]

Summary
Wow, what a week. It's been 7 days since we released Dataset 3 WUs, and YOU, our volunteers have already crunched 48 of the workunits towards our first milestone (100 networks for each of the 100 automata). Client v9.61 appears to be working well, Dataset 1+2 WUs continue working in the background. Dataset 3 WUs were coming in so fast, we had optimize the validation process because server was getting overwhelmed!

At this rate, we're going to be ready for the first release of Dataset 3 (milestone 1) before Daatset 1+2 complete. That's a good result. We'll also release more Dataset 3 WUs soon, This also bodes well for Dataset 4.

Preparations for Dataset 4 (MNIST and TrojAI) are underway. Paper writing still underway, it is unlikely we'll make the deadline we were targeting for the end of this month, because we feel including Dataset 3 would be an even more compelling result.

In other good news, the new server has shipped from the vendor, and should be arriving at the university tomorrow! Meaning sometime in the next few weeks there will be some downtime while we transition to a new server with twice the ram, twice the speed, 3 times the number of cores, and 8 times the storage.

Notes for Sep 21 2020
A weekly summary of news and notes for [email protected]

Summary
The new client (v9.61) is out of testing and deployed on the main MLDS app, and Dataset 3 WUs are out! We've only released 10 WUs per graph at the moment, will up that to at least 100 going forward. Dataset 3 WUs require at least MLDS app v9.61, and all previous version of the app have been deprecated. Also, the MLDStest applications have now been marked as beta, which required users to specify the "run test applications" preferences to participate in testing. Please consider doing so, as testing on mldstest this time around uncovered many issues before wide deployment, but also understand it is unstable and you may not get credit for WUs deployed through the testing app.

Preparations for Dataset 4 (MNIST and TrojAI) are underway. Paper writing continues for a conference deadline at the end of the month.

A weekly summary of news and notes for [email protected]

We're nearing the 2000 hosts with recent credit mark! Thanks to all who are contributing!

We are really, really excited that we're nearing the end of Datasets 1 and 2. Those pesky Parity* and EightBit* networks are starting to finish up, meaning that massive undertaking is nearing an end, and soon will be ready for release.

New this week is the launching of a MLDStest project for beta-testing new client releases and new dataset 3 WUs. Users have the option of opting out of running test units if they wish (under account preferences), but the number of WUs is expected to be very small, and it would be a big help to run them if you can, so please consider remaining as a tester.

This week we fixed most of the issues behind the scenes with Dataset 3, and have already sent out test WUs. This week we're hoping to queue the bulk for Dataset 3 WUs. Preparations for Dataset 4 (MNIST and TrojAI) are underway.

Paper writing continues for a conference deadline at the end of the month.

[TWIM Notes] Sep 8 2020
This Week in [email protected]
Notes for Sep 8 2020
A weekly summary of news and notes for [email protected]

A little late after the long weekend in the US, and in general, a lot of work behind the scenes. It was a relatively quiet week in the forums.

The biggest news is that there's been a hitch with Dataset 3 WUs, in that we're having trouble generating data that the networks can learn. As a refresher, Datasets 1 and 2 are what are being computed now and are nearing completion. Dataset 3 is supposed to train similar RNN networks, but go "wide" instead of "deep" (100 different training sets, only 100-ish examples of each vs. 5 training sets and 10000 of each). As such instead of mimic-ing the 5 simple machines Datasets 1 and 2 are computing, we would instead use 100 randomly generated deterministic finite automata, and train networks to mimic the behavior of these automata. Surprisingly, we're having trouble learning these automata using the networks we have, which we suspect is a bug in our data generation code we're still tracking down and taking us a lot longer than planned.

Because of this, we're pushing up work on Dataset 4. Dataset 4 will be the first to train Convolutional networks (CNNs) on variants of MNIST, specifically those used by the TrojAI project and the "BadNets" paper. The hope is that with enough examples of each network, we can show the same weight-space separation we're able to show with Dataset 1 and 2 on simple RNNs is *also* present on CNN networks, showing greater application of weight space analysis for identifying training data. An updated client for Dataset 4 support is already underway, and should take too long. Hopefully this week, but given the unforeseen issues with Dataset 3, we're hesitant to state a deadline.

Meanwhile, work on debugging Dataset 3 continues. As does paper writing for a conference deadline at the end of the month.

This Week in [email protected]
Notes for Aug 31 2020
A weekly summary of news and notes for [email protected]

The major news this week is that we tweaked the priority a little bit, which allowed a lot of progress on the simpler workunits, and as you'll notice 6 of the 10 network types in Datasets 1 and 2 have reached their goal of 10000 samples! This is a big milestone for the project, and is getting us closer to releasing the first official dataset from this effort.

This week saw the rollout of the v9.5x updated series of clients in preparation for Dataset 3 WUs. Unfortunately the rollout wasn't as smooth as we planned, so most of this week was spent on engineering issues with the client and not on the science. That should change this week, however!

New client released with ARM support!
We are glad to announce a new version of the MLDS application has been deployed to the server. New features include:

This release prepares us for Dataset 3 WUs, which will start trickling out over the next few days as we enter the next phase of the project. The way the clients were built has changed, so please report any issues with the new clients to the forum.

As always check the News section of the website for weekly "This Week in [email protected]" updates, and/or follow us on Twitter at @MLCHome2.

[email protected] and CORAL
Exciting news!

[email protected] is now a project of the The Cognition, Robotics, and Learning (CORAL) lab at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC).

This brings many benefits, not the least of which is lab space to run equipment, new ideas for research to conduct, and a place to collaborate with other researchers who may not be members of the BOINC community. Most importantly, being backed by a university research lab provides some assurance to you, our volunteers, that this project has both academic merit and a purpose beyond a single researcher and their goals. Over the next few days I'll be updating our website to reflect the new affiliation.

As always, please see our main website, https://www.mlcathome.org for details on the current research, or join us by attaching your BOINC client to this URL: https://www.mlcathome.org/mlcathome/

New testing WUs released
As the first round of 50,000 networks finishes training (what I'm referring to as "dataset 1"), I've released a few new test WUs for the next round ("dataset 2"). If these go well, I'll release the next 50,000 networks to train, that should keep keep the WUs flowing a bit more consistently.

Windows support lands, and updates on dataset and progress
Today [email protected] is proud to announce Windows 64-bit support[!
Windows support joins the existing Linux 64-bit bit support already available.

After 1 week, [email protected] contributors have finished over 100,000 workunits, and trained over 14,000 neural networks. That's tremendous, thank you all for your support; and there's a lot more just on the horizon, so keep crunching!

Stats are now exported; requires consent
The project is now exporting stats for stat aggregator sites. I've also enabled stat export consent which defaults to "no". If you would like your stats exported, please check the "Do you consent to exporting your data to BOINC statistics aggregation Web sites?" option under "Project->Preferences".

Thanks again for your support!

Welcome to [email protected], a new BOINC Project

BOINC URL to join: https://www.mlcathome.org/mlcathome/

For an introduction, please see https://www.mlcathome.org/ . I will continue to update that page over the next few days with more information. Please let me know of any issues you have with either the web site or the client. And thank you for your interest.

Here are a few quick bits of information:

Who are we?

We, at the moment, is just me. I'm John Clemens, a Doctoral Candidate at the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). You can view my Google Scholar profile here: https://scholar.google.com/citations?user=kIKFod8AAAAJ&hl=en . You can view my outdated homepage here http://www.deater.net/john. I'm studying ways to extract information from neural networks so we can better understand their uses and limitations. I aim to expand the list of researchers working on this project going forward.

When will Windows be ready

I'm working on it. It shouldn't be more than a week or so before a beta windows client is ready. But I'm a linux developer, so if someone would like to help, please let me know. I'll keep everyone informed of progress.

What happens to the data?
I intend to make all data available for download on the main website. Science dies in darkness.

Thanks again for your interest, now lets get crunching!
